I was reading the news today and found an article talking about how a Saudi cleric said people who call into, watch, or help make shows about horoscopes should be put to death. Also, channels that offer comedies and soaps during Ramadan should be tried and put to death. Clerics expressed concern over the secular way of life encouraged by watching such shows during Ramadan.

I understand the sanctity of Ramadan and feel that Muslims who choose to refrain from watching such programs during that time or all of the time is their choice. However, I feel death is a bit extreme. Lastly, I have a general understanding of what a cleric is, but I was wondering if anyone could explain a little more about them and their role in society.
